Kava is a drink made from the root of the plant of the same name. It's native to Polynesia, Micronesia, and Melonesia. Traditionally it's used for ceremonial purposes, but has found popularity in the US with those looking for an alternative to alcohol. The effects include mild euphoria and relaxed mind and body. It's not chemically or psychologically addictive and under most circumstances isn't really even an intoxicant. It's often described as taking the edge off.
Preparation To make a batch of kava you'll need ground kava root, water, a cotton or synthetic fine mesh bag, and a container to prepare it in. Place 1/2 cup of kava root in the mesh bag and put it in a container with 4 liters of water. Warm water works best, but cold is fine too. Make sure the bag is securely closed and massage the kava in the water for 5 minutes. After that the kava is ready to enjoy. The flavor is described as earthy and it's definitely an acquired taste. Onset of effects is around five minutes and lasts up to an hour.
I've been using kava for almost twelve years. I'll go periods of months or more without it and never feel any kind of cravings. Basically, it's just nice to have if I want it. I also worked at a kava bar for several years and while I don't consider myself an expert, I certainly know enough to answer any questions you might have.
